N-Acetylneuraminic Acid (NANA), commonly known as a sialic acid monomer, is an important terminal residue in glycoproteins and glycolipids. Its molecular formula is C₁₁H₁₉NO₉. NANA typically appears as a white or off-white crystalline powder, soluble in water, with a slightly acidic taste.

Functions & Benefits

Supports Brain Development
NANA is a key component of gangliosides, which are abundant in brain tissue. It plays a vital role in neural development, synapse formation, and signal transmission, making it an essential nutrient for infant growth.
Enhances Immune System
By participating in cell recognition and signaling, NANA helps defend against bacterial and viral infections and contributes to immune regulation.
Promotes Gut Health
As a derivative of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), NANA is naturally present in breast milk at high concentrations. It supports the growth of beneficial gut microbiota and maintains intestinal balance.
Anti-Aging and Skin Benefits
Studies suggest NANA may aid collagen synthesis and skin barrier protection, leading to applications in cosmetics and personal care products.

Applications

Infant formula and nutritional products
Functional health supplements
Pharmaceutical research (anti-viral, anti-inflammatory)
Cosmetics and skin care ingredients

Conclusion
